TriMet's Transit Police
East Patrol District
TriMetʼs Transit Police East patrol district covers a wide geographic and demographic footprint, spanning the
unincorporated areas of east Multnomah County, as well as the cities of Gresham, Maywood Park, Troutdale,
Wood Village, and Fairview. Personnel manage a complex transit environment, patrolling multiple MAX light
rail platforms, busy commercial transit hubs, and a range of bus routes through residential neighborhoods
and business districts. Because these communities rely heavily on interconnected transit lines for daily
commuting and commerce, maintaining a stable, secure presence in this sector is vital to regional equity
and public safety.
By comparing the Transit Police Central and East patrol district call-for-service heatmaps, we identify how
public safety needs shi昀琀 across different sectors of TriMet's network. While both districts manage the safety
of riders and staff, their data footprints reveal distinct operational realities shaped by geography and varying
transit ridership behaviors.
Despite their geographical differences, both districts share a consistent midday surge pattern. In both
heatmaps, the morning hours (3 a.m. to 9 a.m.) remain consistently quiet, represented by minimal call
volumes. Then, around midday, both districts experience a distinct upward trend in activity as ridership
peaks.
For both the Central and East districts, the peak workload of the week is concentrated between Tuesday and
Thursday a昀琀ernoons. This indicates a shared baseline transit rhythm across the entire region, driven by
lunchtime travel, school dismissals, and overlapping commuter shi昀琀 changes.
When analyzing beyond the midday baseline, the heatmaps demonstrate contrasting patterns in how and
when these two districts experience public safety incidents. The Central district call volume drops off
relatively quickly a昀琀er midnight as downtown corridors quiet down. Conversely, the East patrol district
experiences late-night and early-morning surges when the rest of the transit system is typically quiet,
particularly on weekends.
