TriMet's Transit Police
West Patrol District
TriMetʼs Transit Police West patrol district encompasses the entirety of Washington County, managing public
safety across a suburban and commercial corridor including the cities of Beaverton, Tigard, and Hillsboro.
To execute this mission, the Multnomah County Sheriffʼs Office operates in close partnership with the
Beaverton and Hillsboro Police Departments. Together, these coordinated teams patrol a network of MAX
light rail platforms and bus lines that serve as a vital economic lifeline for Washington County.
As we analyze ridership trends in 2026, we must take into account a changing regional footprint. Recent data
from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Portland State University Population Research Center confirms that
population growth in Washington County has outpaced Multnomah County, driven by strong in-migration
and an expanding local job market. This expansion has altered how people use public transit on the west
side.
Historically, west side transit primarily followed a "hub-and-spoke" model, funneling commuters into
Portlandʼs central core. A昀琀er the pandemic, ridership decentralized. Major employers in the regional tech
corridor, combined with corporate campuses and commercial centers, mean that a large portion of riders
are now moving within Washington County rather than leaving it.
In 2025, unlike the Central and East patrol districts, the west patrol district doesnʼt see activity increase until
the late-a昀琀ernoon hours, particularly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Thursdays represent the
heaviest single-day, showing a sustained block of activity that reaches 14 calls at 9 p.m. and 10 calls at 11
p.m (Reference: heatmap on page Page 18).
