TriMet's Transit Police
Collaborative Safety Presence
TriMetʼs Transit Police maintains a layered network of baseline visibility by working alongside private
security personnel from Portland Patrol Inc. (PPI) and Allied Universal Security (AUS). These contracted
professionals are trained to observe and report, enforce system rules, and provide customer service at
high-traffic stations and transit centers.
The landscape of the tri-county transit system is undergoing a transformation. TriMet is reducing its reliance
on private, contracted security officers to funnel resources into a substantially bolstered sworn law
enforcement presence.
While private security and outreach assets remain valuable components of customer service and resource
connection, the complex challenges facing transit agencies across the country require the authority,
advanced crisis training, and investigative capabilities of sworn personnel. As TriMet moves through 2026
and beyond, this evolution ensures TriMetʼs Transit Police remains uniquely equipped to safeguard riders
and operators across all jurisdictions.
