TriMet's Transit Police
Response to Calls for Service
In 2025, the overall volume of dispatched calls related to the transit system remained steady when
compared to 2024 – dropping just 0.6%. However, TriMetʼs Transit Police handled a greater share of the
systemʼs calls when compared to 2024. Due to our optimized staffing model and expanded deployment,
Transit Police responded to 2,166 calls in 2025, a substantial 16.3% increase from the 1,862 responses logged
in 2024. Calls for service are answered through a collaborative regional approach; when transit units are
unavailable, local police officers o昀琀en respond to fill the gaps. By expanding staffing resources, TriMetʼs
Transit Police maximized current resources to deploy dedicated law enforcement personnel exactly where
they were needed most.
Dispatch Calls for Service by Time of Day/Day of Week
TriMet's Transit Police deploys personnel effectively by analyzing calls for service data and evaluating
whether Transit Police or local municipal police officers responded.
When we map data across a 24-hour period over an entire year, our current staffing model successfully
covers traditional weekday commute hours. However, the data highlights a vulnerability on weekends and
late nights, where the system relies almost entirely on local municipal police departments. Looking forward,
TriMetʼs Transit Police anticipates increased staffing, which will mitigate reliance on outside agencies to
handle these incidents.
From Monday through Thursday, the existing 2025 deployment schedule aligns with system needs. Between
11 a.m. and 10 p.m. on these days, TriMetʼs Transit Police broadly covers the overall TriMet network, allowing
local jurisdictions to preserve their resources for non-transit-related calls.
For example, on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., the system - in 2025 - logged 59 total calls (Reference: Third heat map on
Page 10). Because sheriff's deputies and officers were on duty, TriMetʼs Transit Police responded to 48 of
those calls (Reference: First heat map on Page 10), meaning local police departments only had to assist with
a fraction of the workload in 2025 (Reference: Middle heat map on Page 10).
The most significant trend identified is a sharp drop-off in transit police coverage starting Friday morning
and extending through Sunday night. Because 2025 staffing level realities limited our ability to operate a
continuous, 24/7 model, our weekend presence is limited, forcing local police agencies to absorb transit
calls.
